With plans to visit the original Tupelo Honey Café in Asheville a few days later with my family I simply couldn’t resist the opportunity to see the Knoxville location after lunch at The Tomato Head proved memorable only in its mediocrity – surely a visit to one of the South’s most well-known institutions of scratch-made classics and innovative takes on comfort food would help redeem the afternoon, particularly given the off-hour, zero wait time, and renowned southern hospitality which was evident the second I walked in the door to the tune of “How ya’ll doing?” A large restaurant, much brighter than the original as I would soon find out, I was offered my choice of seats and subsequently greeted by a friendly young lady I explained that the menu was not really necessary as coffee and a short stack of each pancake would suffice – an order she would suggest as ‘a lot of food,’ but one I assured her would be fine along with one of Tupelo’s famous buttermilk biscuits, though it took restraint to decline a second of the dense, flaky, golden beauties. Moving past the biscuits but keeping the signature honey with which it came it would not be long before the hubcap sized pancakes arrived and with the Blueberry version rich with buttermilk and crunchy with maple granola only improved by a liberal application of real maple syrup it was the signature sweet potato version that truly wowed, a hefty aroma of cinnamon amongst the soft and buttery crumb and topped with sugared pecans plus a lacquer of honey – the later at the recommendation of my server from whom I received a high five when both plates returned to the kitchen empty.
