Samples: Hard Knock Life 2.0, Toasted Coconut, Black
Double on a Waffle Cone: Ridin’ Duuurty – Oreo Milk, Oreo Chunks, Salted Peanut Butter / Strawberry Shortcake – Strawberry Sherbet, Nilla Wafer Ice Cream
Although Milkjam Creamery is a relative newcomer in comparison to Izzy’s and Sebastian Joe’s there is little doubt after visiting all three that these folks are operating on a whole different level, the About section on their website simply stating “We make ice cream…” avoiding all pomp and circumstance just as the small scoop shop at 2743 Lyndale Avenue South eschews decor save for a single neon sign in order to allow the product to speak for itself.
Now open since early 2016, a year in which accolades that have yet to slow steadily began to accrue, Milkjam Creamery is owned and operated by local Restaurateur Sameh Wadi and bringing a personal history of Lactose intolerance to the game one can expect a great degree of creativity across sixteen daily flavors, a good portion typically Vegan friendly including the dazzling Sorbet simply titled “Black” which features four styles of Chocolate and Cocoa Powder just barely reined in by Coconut and Almond Milks but no added sweetener.
Known for clever names often based on pop-culture, Hard Knock Life 2.0 or Uma Thurman also part of this visit’s collection, it is from scratch each day that Bases are made on-site and set now for expansion to a classic building in South Minneapolis none of that seems likely to change, a fact that could potentially mitigate lines that stretch out the door during warm weather.
Sampling convincing Toasted Coconut plus some of the aforementioned, Black in particular outperforming expectations, it was with tough choices made that two sizeable scoops were loaded atop a housemade Waffle Cone, one called “Ridin’ Duuurty using Cream steeped in Oreos as it base before adding heavily salted Peanut Butter and whole Cookies which retain much of their texture while seasonal Straberry Shortcake may just be the best Ice Cream tasted in years thanks to a Soft Serve-reminiscent twist of jammy Strawberry Sherbet and Ice Cream virtually indistinguishable form the flavor of Nilla Wafers.
