Serving the East Side for nearly four years it was mid-August 2018 that Veganbites took over the space at 7293 West Sahara Avenue, Chocolate & Spice as well as Rolling in Dough now gone but the Bakery known for Vegan, Gluten Free and allergy sensitive products opting to make a go of it while at the same time expanding into plated Foods including Pasta, Spring Rolls, Salads and Sandwiches.
Operated by Franz Stanik for the past two years, a reported quadrupling in self-identified Vegans occupying Sin City over the past five years seeing him buy out former owners, guests familiar with Megan Romano’s once well-regarded space will immediately feel at home inside Veganbites, much of the furniture kept exactly as it was while cases and countertops now stand filled with a different variety of scratch-made Baked Goods.
Staffed by the sort of servers one might expect to find at Whole Foods, thin and pleasant if not particularly professional, it was after a bit of perusal that decisions were made to the tune of six items for just under $15, the choice to indulge elsewhere largely based on the space being empty save for what very well may have been the owner sitting by the window on his laptop.
Using all the right buzzwords in terms of “natural,” “non-GMO” and preservative-free, an admirable achievement though one does question a bag of Oreos seen on the counter in back, it was beginning with two $1 Cookies that tasting got started, the Gluten Free Chocolate Chip falling far short of those made with Butter, Eggs and Flour while Oatmeal Raisin suffered no such problem thanks to plenty of spice and flexibility plus lots of dried Fruit.
Next intrigued by a $2.75 Donut, the soft Sponge with melted Sprinkles reminiscent of Pound Cake while ‘Frosting’ on top was unfortunately more like a Candy Shell, it was in follow-up that Veganbites finally hit its stride in a Loaf Cake loaded with Blueberries and Lemon Zest, the Icing on top soft and lightly sweetened by Palm Sugar which should also be considered for the aforementioned baked round.
At this point torn in how to finish, both a sizable Brownie and Carrot Cake in a plastic clamshell tempting, it was opting first for the former that teeth met dense Fudge mellowed by Walnuts and very little Flour while the Cake fared even better thanks to good density and bright aromatics beneath a generous layer of Buttercream with a velvety mouthfeel.
THREE AND A HALF STARS: Opting to bring Veganbites across the Strip after four successful years says a lot about the brand’s aspirations and with a few small changes it seems as though the store could succeed where others have not, though in its current format Veganbites remains best suited to its growing niche market as better versions of each item can be found elsewhere provided one does not have specific allergy or ethical needs.
