Operated by Erin Lang and Donny Capozzi since 2010, though only brick-and-mortar beginning in early 2017, there are many who place Garden Creamery alongside Humphry Slocombe and Bi-Rite as one of The Bay Area’s best scoop shops, a Saturday visit in March attesting to quality craftsmanship and good ingredients across a variety of flavors.
Sourcing Milk from Straus Family Creamery and becoming an Instagram darling thanks to “Chimney Cones,” an item discontinued in November of 2018 for undisclosed reasons, it is upon perusal of 21 choices that a predilection for Asia is found, the owner’s Hawaiian heritage likely at least partially responsible though classics such as Cookies and Cream or Caramel are certainly not forgotten.
Inhabiting the corner of Lexington and 20th Street in the Mission, prices of $4.50 per scoop or $6.75 for a double high but in-line with competitors, it was after several tastes that three flavors on a Waffle Cone were requested, the Purple Yam and Kaya Cream both smooth and subtly perfumed by Pandan while Black Sesame is awash with toasty notes and subtle saltiness that works well as a counterpoint but may be too abrupt on its own.
