After a recent trek of the French bakeries of San Francisco the name \u201cLa Provence\u201d stuck out like a sore thumb, the reviews were solid, it opened at 6:30, and it was located on Olympic only 4 miles from the Medical Center\u2026sold! An early morning run and lift at Bally\u2019s (5am,) a quick shower, and throwing on the black Versace suit I made my way over to La Provence and saw the sign \u201cno pictures\u201d clear as day on the door\u2026\u2026sigh, another bakery that thinks it is somehow \u201cbetter\u201d than the French Laundry, Alex, or Charlie Trotters. Ignoring the signs I proceeded to snap pictures both inside and out \u2013 nothing was said by either clerk. <\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/Sc69FUag60I\/AAAAAAAACZY\/X10nB1FblqQ\/s1600-h\/117+-+La+Provence.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318396109048048450\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/endoedibles.com\/wp-content\/themes\/grey-opaque\/plugins\/lazy-load\/images\/1x1.trans.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/Sc69FUag60I\/AAAAAAAACZY\/X10nB1FblqQ\/s320\/117+-+La+Provence.JPG\" border=\"0\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318396109048048450\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/Sc69FUag60I\/AAAAAAAACZY\/X10nB1FblqQ\/s320\/117+-+La+Provence.JPG\" border=\"0\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/div>\n<div>Quite empty for so early in the morning I browsed the cases and must admit that aside from the enormous $28 Red Velvet cupcake there wasn\u2019t too much \u201cunique\u201d about La Provence\u2019s items, but all looked nice and fresh. After approximately 2-3 minutes of browsing I was finally asked by a clerk if I would like to order and I said sure, selecting 4 items. \u201cFor here or to go?\u201d said the clerk. \u201cFor here.\u201d \u201cYou are going to eat all of this alone? You are too skinny.\u201d I laughed\u2026I\u2019ve eaten more\u2026.their portions weren\u2019t exactly supersized. \u201cTake a seat, I will bring it to you shortly.\u201d <\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/Sc69FwJxEBI\/AAAAAAAACZg\/ebBouPDVA68\/s1600-h\/119+-+La+Provence.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318396116493996050\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/endoedibles.com\/wp-content\/themes\/grey-opaque\/plugins\/lazy-load\/images\/1x1.trans.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/Sc69FwJxEBI\/AAAAAAAACZg\/ebBouPDVA68\/s320\/119+-+La+Provence.JPG\" border=\"0\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318396116493996050\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/Sc69FwJxEBI\/AAAAAAAACZg\/ebBouPDVA68\/s320\/119+-+La+Provence.JPG\" border=\"0\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/div>\n<div>Confused because the items were all plainly available in the case, I took a seat\u2026and 5 minutes passed before I was brought the items and a bill \u2013 odd. My first taste of the goods was a $2.95 Almond Croissant \u2013 appropriately crispy on the outside I waited for the soft inside to give way to some Almond flavor or compote\u2026a flavor that never came. On examination this was simply a plain croissant with approximately 2 almonds chopped into small pieces on top. <\/div>\n<div>Disappointed in the Croissant I next moved onto the $1.75 Pistacchio Macaron. Soft on the outside and creamy sweet on the inside, this cookie was appropriately formed but certainly not on par with that of Keller, Paulette, or Boulangerie. Average at best. <\/div>\n<div>My next choice, the Cinnamon-Custard Roll, another disappointment. Similar pate a choux style pastry to the Croissant the buttery roll was tasty enough and the cinnamon\/powdered sugar appropriately sweet, but the custard was largely flavorless and added nothing to the cinnamon roll aside from some moisture. Yawn. <\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/Sc69GdPCroI\/AAAAAAAACZo\/1ujHj3IZ31c\/s1600-h\/120+-+Almond+Croissant,+Pistacchio+Macaron,+Cinnamon-Custard+Roll,+Red+Velvet+Cupcake.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318396128595717762\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/endoedibles.com\/wp-content\/themes\/grey-opaque\/plugins\/lazy-load\/images\/1x1.trans.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/Sc69GdPCroI\/AAAAAAAACZo\/1ujHj3IZ31c\/s320\/120+-+Almond+Croissant,+Pistacchio+Macaron,+Cinnamon-Custard+Roll,+Red+Velvet+Cupcake.JPG\" border=\"0\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318396128595717762\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/Sc69GdPCroI\/AAAAAAAACZo\/1ujHj3IZ31c\/s320\/120+-+Almond+Croissant,+Pistacchio+Macaron,+Cinnamon-Custard+Roll,+Red+Velvet+Cupcake.JPG\" border=\"0\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/div>\n<div>Finally, having read allegations that La Provence\u2019s Red Velvet Cupcake was the best in LA I decided to give it a chance\u2026and was disappointed yet again. The frosting was not cream-cheese or fruitfully accented but merely a thick sugary buttermilk and as such not even remotely authentic. The cake itself was moist but lacked the cocoa punch of Yummy or Vanilla and wasn\u2019t even close to the versions at Sweet Lady Jane or Jack n\u2019 Jills. <\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/Sc69Gr-Cq2I\/AAAAAAAACZw\/UT0cd-vGf9c\/s1600-h\/121+-+Red+Velvet.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318396132550945634\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/endoedibles.com\/wp-content\/themes\/grey-opaque\/plugins\/lazy-load\/images\/1x1.trans.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/Sc69Gr-Cq2I\/AAAAAAAACZw\/UT0cd-vGf9c\/s320\/121+-+Red+Velvet.JPG\" border=\"0\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318396132550945634\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/Sc69Gr-Cq2I\/AAAAAAAACZw\/UT0cd-vGf9c\/s320\/121+-+Red+Velvet.JPG\" border=\"0\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/div>\n<div>All told I found La Provence to be off the beaten path and perhaps \u201cundiscovered,\u201d but at the same time I can\u2019t really name any item that was worthy of discovery.
