Walking into “Walton’s Fancy &Staple” on the advice of a friend I rather knew what to expect, a botany and bakery with signage including a white on black ampersand essentially a hipster Bat-Signal in a city like Austin, but with food and beverages as the focus I set aside the service issues of Cenote and Irie and hoped for the best…the service just fine, but the food a mixed bag. Located on 6th and truly a lovely space bathed in sunlight and old-time charm with Baked Goods and a Marzocco machine enticing on entry it was with minimal hesitation that I ordered the first of two Americanos and following up with four ‘pastries’ while the kitchen tended to a proper plate things started off great – a few bites of the signature cake proving subtle but delicious and the rich liquid-based tart proving equally impressive while both Monkey Bread and cookie would prove far too dry…the former even questionably stale. Boxing what was left to be discarded it was after perhaps ten minutes that the $7.75 single slice of eggy challah arrived and although soft and saturated with custard the exterior lacked any discernible difference in texture; the berries and syrup left to prop up an overpriced and underwhelming plate.<\/p>\n
