HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442019454107055442\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4Xv3EbQ9VI\/AAAAAAAAFCg\/eu8YIc03B0E\/s320\/187+-+Setting+(2).JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">Great parades, great people, amazing food \u2013 really, the most \u201cfun\u201d I\u2019ve had on a trip in the past year\u2026and to cap off a wonderful visit to New Orleans I wanted to do something special \u2013 to go out on top, as it were.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Having already done classic or refined New Orleans cuisine for most of my meals I figured a trip to the pinnacle of \u201chaute-Creole\u201d was in order \u2013after the meal I had at Luke I was relatively certain that John Besh\u2019s flagship wouldn\u2019t disappoint.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>After a few more hours of wandering the quarter, people watching (the costumes are better than Halloween,) and shopping I made my way to the doors of Restaurant August approximately 5 minutes early for my 8:00pm reservation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4Xv3owmVPI\/AAAAAAAAFCo\/5HO4JerXq6c\/s1600-h\/187+-+Setting+(4).JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442019463860212978\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4Xv3owmVPI\/AAAAAAAAFCo\/5HO4JerXq6c\/s320\/187+-+Setting+(4).JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">Entering the small lobby I felt comfortable \u2013 this place looked and felt like fine dining\u2026not that other places in New Orleans didn\u2019t, but this was more Robuchon or Keller than Clancy or Brigtsen.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Greeted by a pair of friendly hosts my reservation was confirmed and I was led to a two-top along the wall of the front dining room \u2013 plenty of light, a great view of the street, and isolated from the sounds of the surprisingly loud bar.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Water choices (sparkling, tap, bottled) were offered and I selected tap \u2013 it is appropriate to note here that twice during the meal I had to raise my glass or ask the server for water refills \u2013 a minor thing to some but a mistake that should not happen at a restaurant like August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4Xv32Uz9_I\/AAAAAAAAFCw\/KspRTOVfF5g\/s1600-h\/187+-+Setting+(6).JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 240px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442019467501762546\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4Xv32Uz9_I\/AAAAAAAAFCw\/KspRTOVfF5g\/s320\/187+-+Setting+(6).JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">Greeted next by my waiter, a younger Asian fellow who appeared sporadically but was clearly working in other rooms of the large house as well, I was given a menu as well as wine\/cocktail list which I declined.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Going over the structure of the menu my server explained the 4-course, 7-course, and a la carte options while additionally noting that anything on either of the tasting menus could be ordered a la carte.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>In asking about creating my own tasting he stated that 2 appetizers, a main, plus dessert would be \u201cprobably a lot of food\u201d \u2013 so I ordered <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>3 appetizers and a main with dessert to be decided on later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4Xv4M7x1sI\/AAAAAAAAFC4\/ooyD0r56di4\/s1600-h\/188+-+Table+Setting.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; the same excellent blend that was served at Luke \u2013 was French Bread and Butter.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>More \u201cmini-baguettes\u201d than the big loafs elsewhere these certainly fit the concept of fine dining, but unfortunately the exterior was a bit too crunchy and the exterior to interior ratio led to a rather dry experience.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Served with the same delectable butter as at Luke I\u2019m rather certain Besh must have this sourced for all of his restaurants and he should definitely let other local restaurants in on the secret.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4Xv4sAPzPI\/AAAAAAAAFDA\/7qXwL3Tikho\/s1600-h\/190+-+French+Bread.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; Potato gnocchi with Blue Crab and Black Truffles in Cream Sauce.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Topped with shaved parmigiano-reggiano just prior to service and featuring an ample portion of crab and cream sauce plus small chips of black truffle the gnocchi were pillow-soft and perfectly prepared \u2013 the best textured potato gnocchi I\u2019ve had since the French Laundry.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Well complimented by the buttery sauce the crab was delectable and the cheese lent sharpness to the dish as well as some textural variation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>If anything were disappointing about this dish it would be the truffles \u2013 largely lacking in both aroma and flavor I think the dish would have been just as good without their presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4XwxOrgftI\/AAAAAAAAFDQ\/ce37xXUgZI0\/s1600-h\/192+-+Gnocchi+with+Black+Truffle+and+Blue+Crab+(2).JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442020453291949778\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4XwxOrgftI\/AAAAAAAAFDQ\/ce37xXUgZI0\/s320\/192+-+Gnocchi+with+Black+Truffle+and+Blue+Crab+(2).JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">My second dish of the evening was the ever rotating (and bargain priced at $20) Foie Gras three ways.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Another ever-present August item the nightly preparation featured a small dollop of mousse in \u201ccrunchy chicory crumbs\u201d over mango puree on the left, a German inspired \u201cPickled Foie Gras Gateaux\u201d surrounded by sweetened layers of cake and topped with Riesling gelatin cubes in the middle, and a pheasant and Foie pate with fig compote to the right.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Served with buttery toasted brioche I absolutely loved the bitter\/sweet contrast of the dollop, particularly spread on the bread but also quite liked the Gateaux which my server explained to me was pickled and slow cooked in pear vinegar.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>While I can\u2019t say I loved the pheasant terrine I\u2019ve never really fancied mixed fowl\/foie outside of the version at Guy Savoy \u2013 that noted it was definitely as good as the preparations I had at Per Se and Daniel.<a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4XwxiAhtaI\/AAAAAAAAFDY\/iq66fXBeD_o\/s1600-h\/193+-+Foie+Gras+three+Ways+(1).JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442020466830313746\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4XwyBHTiRI\/AAAAAAAAFDg\/j49VrgHZH2o\/s320\/193+-+Foie+Gras+three+Ways+(2).JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">The second service issue of the evening occurred after the foie gras \u2013 my next course arrived literally 20 seconds after I finished the Foie Gras and it was cool \u2013 almost as though they\u2019d not expected me to take my time with the foie (I admittedly requested a second plate of brioche and spent 20 minutes on the dish.)<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Aside from the temperature and rushed timing I will admit that for a mere $11 the truffle larded Sweetbreads picatta<u> <\/u>was quite excellent.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Featuring two large and creamy pan-seared sweetbreads pounded flat the texture of the meat and the manner in which it contrasted with the wilted romaine were excellent while the herbed cream sauce was reminiscent of a refined ranch dressing with tones of lemon and capers peaking through and accenting the protein.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4XwycKYc4I\/AAAAAAAAFDo\/6oa6K67aREM\/s1600-h\/194+-+Sweetbread+Muniere+(1).JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442020474090976130\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4XwycKYc4I\/AAAAAAAAFDo\/6oa6K67aREM\/s320\/194+-+Sweetbread+Muniere+(1).JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">For my main I went with the trend of my trip and the timing between this course and the sweetbreads was perfect.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Entitled \u201cSugar and Spice Duckling with roasted duck foie, McEwan\u2019s stone ground grits and candied quince\u201d the presentation of the dish was quite nice and I understood where the chef was going with the preparation \u2013 but unfortunately the duck didn\u2019t live up to its complimentary pieces.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Overly salted and somewhat chewy this was the first duck of the trip that I felt was of less than stellar sourcing quality \u2013 it was a tad gamey and the cane sugar sweetness wasn\u2019t quite enough to temper the briny flavor.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Where the duck lacked I was quite impressed by the vanilla and butter accented grits, perfectly cleaned and seared foie, and the sweet yet balanced quince.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Consuming the duck with its companion carbs helped, but for $32 the main component of the dish should\u2019ve been better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4XxoRvtZgI\/AAAAAAAAFD4\/Ibai3TTldYE\/s1600-h\/196+-+The+Duck+(3).JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442021399007684098\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4XxoRvtZgI\/AAAAAAAAFD4\/Ibai3TTldYE\/s320\/196+-+The+Duck+(3).JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">It was at this point of the meal that I raised my glass (as noted above) to request a water refill and this must have been witnessed by one of the dining room captains who personally filled the glass and later pulled my server aside near the kitchen \u2013 apparently to lecture him \u2013 just prior to him bringing me the dinner menu.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Browsing the dessert menu and seeing no bread pudding I decided to go with my gut and try something with Banana \u2013 in this case Pere Roux\u2019s banana rum cake with Creole cream-cheese icing.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Explaining that this dish would take \u201cabout ten minutes\u201d to prepare I opted to make my way to the restroom and interestingly walked right past the pastry kitchen upstairs while where the chef was hard at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4XxoKH_-YI\/AAAAAAAAFDw\/oDBFC02PFAo\/s1600-h\/195+-+Kitchen+(1).JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 240px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442021396962081154\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4XxoKH_-YI\/AAAAAAAAFDw\/oDBFC02PFAo\/s320\/195+-+Kitchen+(1).JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">Returning to my table the captain stopped by again and apologized for the \u201cinconvenience\u201d explaining that they had a relatively new staff and many of their more experienced servers were off for the holiday.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Explaining to him that it really was not a big deal but thanking him for the concern he told me the dessert would be \u201con the house\u201d and sure enough neither it nor the coffee appeared on my final bill.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>When the dessert did arrive it was truly worth the wait \u2013 a hand-made layer cake fresh from the kitchen.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>Featuring interspersed layers of creamy banana butter cake soaked in rum with layers of creamy vanilla accented cream cheese icing and paired with white chocolate shavings, fresh berries, and a smear of caramel this dessert was truly beautiful and equally delicious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4Xxo9qFbVI\/AAAAAAAAFEA\/wpe09muhg44\/s1600-h\/198+-+Banana+Cake+(2).JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442021410795253074\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4Xxo9qFbVI\/AAAAAAAAFEA\/wpe09muhg44\/s320\/198+-+Banana+Cake+(2).JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">Smiling contently the captain came to check on me again and we talked food for a few moments before I was brought the admittedly modest bill along with the nightly mignardises \u2013 two small \u201cpraline brittles\u201d that were like crunchy pralines and two lemon accented madelines that were alright but certainly not Daniel, Alex, or Ducasse quality.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">  <\/span>As an added bonus I was given two of the nightly take-home gifts \u2013 on this day a miniature King Cake that was surprisingly moist, textural, and with plenty of cinnamon and sugar \u2013 I took the second cake home to my aunt who I met in Chicago and she noted it was still delicious 24 hours later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/S4XxpJcn6eI\/AAAAAAAAFEI\/vfkQ7Uu5izI\/s1600-h\/199+-+Mignardises+(2).JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px;
