HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558850362302163154\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUA89SSaNI\/AAAAAAAAHjU\/3bFu0_EG1nI\/s320\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%25281%2529.JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">\u2026in The Big Lebowski \u201cThe Stranger\u201d says to Lebowski \u201cI like your style, Dude\u201d\u2026that pretty much sums up how I feel about Jose Andres.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Having been to Comme Ca earlier in the week I saw Andres pacing circles around the inside of Jaleo \u2013 The Cosmopolitan had been open for two days and the restaurant was not yet fully operational.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>When I left Comme Ca he was standing outside and I walked up, said hello, and told him how I\u2019d really enjoyed The Bazaar, Zaytinya, and Caf\u00e9 Atlantico \u2013 and jokingly asked who I had to call to get a seat at minibar.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>He seemed a nice fellow, though clearly his mind was on other things during our brief chat.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Excited as I was about his newest concept I told the chef we\u2019d be visiting China Poblano later in the week and he said \u201cit\u2019s my best looking restaurant yet and the menu design has been amazing \u2013 be sure to order some tacos.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUA9f1JEGI\/AAAAAAAAHjk\/GFux1rkL7MQ\/s1600\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252811%2529.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558850371575156834\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUA9f1JEGI\/AAAAAAAAHjk\/GFux1rkL7MQ\/s320\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252811%2529.JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">Conceptually \u201cChinese Mexican fusion,\u201d China Poblano is billed as a blending of the two rich cultures.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Located on the 2nd floor of the Cosmopolitan somewhat hidden in the back, the restaurant is certainly eye catching.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>With an entryway shaped like Buddha and \u201cMexican Takeout\u201d windows on either side the campy feel is palpable, but acceptable.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>With an interior of communal and separate dining tables, a noodle making station, and wall decorations ranging from Chinese Opera Masks and Lanterns to Luchador Masks and Oaxacan carvings the interior was colorful to say the least.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>In addition to the fixed objects there were also large morphing murals \u2013 projections of famous and peasant Chinese and Mexican individuals.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Even the restroom continued the theme \u2013 papered in money from each country.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">To see the restaurant is to love it \u2013 or perhaps to hate it depending on your taste \u2013 it is certainly over the top.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUA9gxujTI\/AAAAAAAAHjs\/B5BWquCBhz4\/s1600\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252813%2529.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558850371829271858\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUA9gxujTI\/AAAAAAAAHjs\/B5BWquCBhz4\/s320\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252813%2529.JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">With reservations made and my sister and I running late shopping our mother and aunt would arrive at the restaurant before us to collect on the noon reservation, yet entering the doors around 12:10pm it actually wasn\u2019t my family who first caught my eye, but rather Chef Andres who was wandering the premises.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>A dervish of energy the Chef was both in and out of the kitchen \u2013 at one moment visibly inspecting dishes at the pass and the next out chatting with clients, taking pictures, and helping the front of the house.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Clearly splitting time between Jaleo and China Poblano his visits to diners were brief and seemingly orchestrated by a large man who would turn out to be the dining room manager.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Though Jose never stopped by our table I was able to obtain a signed menu by asking the manager \u2013 another in my growing collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUCUZ7zGJI\/AAAAAAAAHj8\/MCvEO-uzU7A\/s1600\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252817%2529.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558851864641083538\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUCUZ7zGJI\/AAAAAAAAHj8\/MCvEO-uzU7A\/s320\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252817%2529.JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">After finding the ladies (already seated at one of the large communal tables beneath the giant bubble of changing faces and images) we were greeted quickly by our server Brea and noticed menus were already in place as mom and aunt had already ordered Iced Tea ($4 each,) Chips and Salsa fresh tortilla chips\/house-made chipotle salsa ($4,) and Guacamole made one-by-one\/fresh tortillas ($12.)<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>With the chips, salsa, and tortillas all fairly standard I was somewhat disappointed when my mother told me the salsa was not made tableside a la Caf\u00e9 Atlantico \u2013 but it sure was good with lots of garlic and cilantro accenting the creamy yet chunky avocado.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUA9IeGncI\/AAAAAAAAHjc\/M1-urxk9QqU\/s1600\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%25284%2529.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558850365304511938\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUA9IeGncI\/AAAAAAAAHjc\/M1-urxk9QqU\/s320\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%25284%2529.JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">With a $5 (10oz) diet coke ordered by my sister we pondered the admittedly eclectic menu for some time before placing orders \u2013 admittedly the service at this point was a tad overbearing with Brea eyeing our table frequently and stopping by thrice in a short period of time.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>With orders placed, however, I will note that the service at China Poblano was exemplary with dishes arriving randomly with excellent descriptions and not in a huge bolus (ie Julian Serrano.)<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Additionally, despite the bustling nature of the loud restaurant our waters never reached less than half empty, plates and paper napkins (in a dispenser, you\u2019ll need \u2018em for those tacos) plus silverware were quickly bussed away by ancillary staff and replaced before they were ever missed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUA9yM-OTI\/AAAAAAAAHj0\/Yrt1hqjZQpA\/s1600\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252815%2529.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 240px; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558850376506947890\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUA9yM-OTI\/AAAAAAAAHj0\/Yrt1hqjZQpA\/s320\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252815%2529.JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">Beginning first with a round of tacos, we ordered four different options amongst the group.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>I will note that at the time of our visit the menu was still in development and tacos were sold solo as opposed to in pairs \u2013 some options were also cheaper.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Arriving in warm soft shells and approximately three bites each the first tastes of taco would come from Langosta.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Described as meaty lobster\/mango\/arbol chile sauce ($16 for 2 now, $6\/e prev) the flavors were good, but unfortunately the lobster was slightly overcooked and I felt the chile sauce overwhelmed the subtleties of the sweet crustacean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUCU1lTS0I\/AAAAAAAAHkE\/lOOlz2jpAUg\/s1600\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252820%2529.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; duck tongue\/rambutan fruit ($4.5\/e.)<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Unfamiliar with rambutan until this time I was impressed by the fleshy sweet fruit and its ability to temper the salty, savory, and somewhat chewy tongues.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>While not as nuanced as some of the other tacos, these are definitely worth checking out if only to experience the ingredients at a relatively cheap price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUCVPylj-I\/AAAAAAAAHkM\/z5xR_in3DJE\/s1600\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252821%2529.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558851879097962466\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUCVPylj-I\/AAAAAAAAHkM\/z5xR_in3DJE\/s320\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252821%2529.JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">The Cochinita tacos, described as Yucatan-style pit barbeque pork\/marinated onions ($4\/e) were good, but rather expected and unidimensional.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"><\/span>Savory and sweet the pork and onions melded nicely, but in total the flavor was no better or worse than a good pork taco anywhere else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUCVTpVCyI\/AAAAAAAAHkU\/EzXodYnjHlI\/s1600\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252822%2529.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; Carnitas braised baby pig\/pork rinds\/spicy salsa verde cruda ($4\/e prev.)<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>With the braised baby pig perfectly done \u2013 supple, moist and flavorful \u2013 the addition of pork rinds added a lovely degree of crunch and saltiness.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Tempering the other two dishes and adding a bit of spice plus vegetal acidity the salsa was spicy without being overly so \u2013 in my opinion they should serve this salsa instead of the chipotle version with the tortilla chips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUDb670wqI\/AAAAAAAAHk8\/TP7eo-V9gUc\/s1600\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252830%2529.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; Coctel de Camarones fresh shrimp\/jumbo lump crab meat\/tomato\/avocado ($12.)<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Essentially a whole lot of underwhelming salsa in a bowl with a couple of snappy sweet shrimp, thin shreds of crab, and chunks of avocado plus tortillas for dunking it was almost as if someone forgot to add salt, or spice, or vinegar, or really anything other than the listed ingredients which simply were not of all that impressive quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUDbGGRG3I\/AAAAAAAAHkk\/vjwlwr5YKGw\/s1600\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252825%2529.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; Love Is In the Air heirloom tomatoes\/sugar air ($8.8<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/endoedibles.com\/wp-content\/themes\/grey-opaque\/plugins\/lazy-load\/images\/1x1.trans.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/endoedibles.com\/wp-content\/themes\/grey-opaque\/images\/smilies\/icon_cool.gif\" alt=\"Smilie: 8)\" title=\"Smilie: 8)\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/endoedibles.com\/wp-content\/themes\/grey-opaque\/images\/smilies\/icon_cool.gif\" alt=\"Smilie: 8)\" title=\"Smilie: 8)\" \/><\/noscript> was much simpler in ingredients and much more complex in flavor.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Nicely presented in a large bowl with what must have been two fresh whole tomatoes and a splash of vinegar the dish was topped with an \u201cmg\u201d manufactured foam full of delicate sweetness that acted only to enhance the natural flavors of the tomatoes beneath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUCVy9gWpI\/AAAAAAAAHkc\/LGZecdG-TNE\/s1600\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252823%2529.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558853096596185874\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUDcHUyIxI\/AAAAAAAAHlE\/LCnMegSHRPg\/s320\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252832%2529.JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">Leaning more towards the Chinese half of the menu for our larger dishes, Ocean Nest scallops\/crab\/shrimp\/pan-fried egg noodles\/seasonal vegetables ( $10 at our visit and now $22 w\/ king crab\/lobster) would be a successful yet rather ordinary dish.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>With crispy noodles resting in a gentle fish broth at the base and three head-on shrimp, three scallops, and a few chunks of crab interspersed with bok choy, spinach, and onions the flavors all worked and the textures were nicely done \u2013 at $10 the dish was a steal, but lobster or not I don\u2019t think I\u2019d recommend it at the current price point unless there was a good deal more seafood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUDbYWsn9I\/AAAAAAAAHks\/u0Ot8jlIps4\/s1600\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252827%2529.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5558853083987746770\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUDbYWsn9I\/AAAAAAAAHks\/u0Ot8jlIps4\/s320\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252827%2529.JPG\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\">The second larger plate, The Unruly Monk with hand-cut noodles\/bok choy\/wild wood ear mushrooms\/poached egg ($16) was ordered because we saw the chef hand stretching noodles at the counters.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>Served in an enormous bowl with perhaps a half liter of broth, boiled bok choy, a single egg, and a plethora of mushrooms the dish would be a nearly mirror experience of the Ocean Nest \u2013 a nicely executed dish, but no better than could be made at a local Chinese restaurant in most mid-sized US cities.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\"> <\/span>With the creamy egg definitely adding its characteristic creamy mouth feel to the dish I will note that my sister, who ate the majority of this dish, felt rather ill the rest of the day and stated that she simply couldn\u2019t get the taste of egg out of her stomach\/throat until nearly 24 hours later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNoSpacing\"><span style=\"font-family:Calibri;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_xdnxgKcsXfw\/TSUDbhHjoJI\/AAAAAAAAHk0\/_qgCq3vY2cY\/s1600\/025%2B-%2BChina%2BPoblano%2B%252828%2529.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"WIDTH: 320px;
