One of the first \u201cartisan\u201d doughnut shops to break onto the scene \u2013 shockingly as far back as 1994 \u2013 my first visit to Doughnut Plant on the LES was far less than inspiring, yet given the strong word of mouth from friends I decided I owed the bakery a second chance and opting for the new Chelsea location with a focus on cake options I\u2019m glad to say that sometimes first impressions can be deceiving as each of my five selections proved to be excellent while the lack of a line and presence of seating kept the hassle factor to a minimum. From the dense cocoa of the blackout to the subtle and smoky earth notes of the pistachio to a trio of doughnuts based on cookies and cakes I would be hard pressed to name a \u2018favorite\u2019 amongst the quintet but rife with carrots, raisins, and spice I\u2019d also have a hard time naming a better carrot cake in the city, authentic or not.<\/p>\n
