Opening later than I’d guessed – 9am on Sunday – thus letting me explore the Mission a bit further while I waited for the Closed sign to flip to Open, Mission Pie was one of those places I’d always been meaning to visit but never made the time for; thankfully it was worth the wait. A rustic spot with rustic food including a few scones and muffins it should go without saying that although I’m sure those items were good the real reason to visit is the pie and with over a dozen options on the shelf that day I chose one slice for myself and deferred to the cute young lady behind the counter for the other, a slice of Plum Frangipane and Walnut, respectively. Topping both off with house made whipped cream the early morning scene was hipster-free and much like everything else in the area the quality of the locally sourced items truly shined in both desserts – magnificent plums with a tinge of almond overlying butter, flaky crust in one hand and caramelized walnuts, toasty and slightly bitter in the other – it was only the fact that I had more dining plans shortly thereafter that prevented me trying the apple or peach.
