Recently named to more than a couple “best of” lists and featuring what many claimed to be a particularly impressive collection of old-fashioneds, Kettle Glazed quickly found itself high on my list of ‘must visit’ breakfast and pastry stops in Los Angeles; convenient location and early opening hours befitting an early Sunday post-run stop. A small storefront in a rather unassuming strip mall along Franklin Avenue with a clean design and friendly service it was just after 7:00am when I arrived to find a couple regulars kibitzing with the staff and opting for a fritter plus a “cruffin” immediately it was to the others that I deferred my other four with the stipulation that anything warm would be preferred; the $9 half dozen telling a familiar tale about why freshness matters as the warm Vanilla Old Fashioned far outshined both blueberry options, the former melting on mastication while the dry, cakey duo found themselves reboxed and subsequently left for the pigeons or vagrants (along with several dreadful options from SK.) Moving on to better things, noting my predilection for cake over glazed it can certainly be said that the steamy, springy, glazed original was one of the best I’ve had in recent memory and while the fritter, too, was well executed it was the deep-fried muffin-pan croissant that impressed the most as delicate glaze gave way to buttery shattering layers straddling a fine line between Kouign Amann and catshead biscuit – a rare winner in the ever growing hybrid food movement well worth getting out of bed early for.
