More than a little annoyed by the fact that Cristino’s had managed to substantially botch their ovens, to the point where pizza could not be made, when opting to clean on Turkey Day it was after viewing both Chihuly and Dali that we made a Bee Line to South Pasadena and arriving at Ted Peter’s Famous Smoked Fish just after 3pm there were only a few locals found to be sitting at the open air building where the pleasant smell of burning wood perfumed the air.

Undeniably a local gem, with a limited menu focused around a smokehouse and grill, it was unfortunately with two fish-averse family members that I was dining and with the duo making due with grilled hot dogs along with a side of slaw I duly invested in the relish-studded amalgam of salmon, mackerel, and mullet served with several packs of saltines, each briny bite texturally smooth and balanced by smoke while a coffee mug of well-stocked chowder was equally well crafted with fresh tomatoes lending their natural sweetness and acid to clams, potatoes, corn, and even more fish.

Rounding out the meal with two slices of Florida’s signature pie, in this case matching substantial tartness with lightly whipped cream, suffice it to say that while perhaps not a spot for ‘everyone,’ a trip to Ted Peter’s is worth it for those interested in such things, a cash-only spot like very few others that has survived the test of time by doing one thing and doing it right.
