Located smack dab in the center of the Grand Central Market, where my 10:00am arrival found eggslut with a hilariously long line for food that is fine but not phenomenal, it was with a smile on my face that I pulled up to the counter at Wexler’s Deli and although lunchtime sandwiches would not be served for another hour the objects of my desire were already available, a smiling server dancing to the beat of nearby 90’s music taking my order and suggesting the wait to be ‘about five minutes.’
Receiving universal praise for its house-made pastrami and smoked fish that many claim to be even better than legendary Langer’s it was indeed just about five minutes after sitting down to a glass of water to watch the kitchen work that a small tray arrived and with plenty of sweets already enjoyed that particular morning a first bite of the toothsome and supple sesame bagel wrapped around eggs punctuated with pastrami proved every bit as good as the rumors, a light veil of cheese adding just enough smooth salinity to bring peppery notes to the fore.
Baring in mind the days later eats, but unable to resist housemade pickles that were snappy and well brined with notes of garlic and dill, it was finally in the house Black and White Cookie that I indulged and eschewing the typical overly sweet frosting in favor of dark chocolate ganache and what can best be described as thinned vanilla buttercream the soft crumb of the small disc was far better than more ‘common’ iterations, though far more reasonably sized…depending on one’s definition of reasonable, I guess.
