Seeing the local competition for artisan baked goods grow since a pair of visits to Mothership Coffee Roasters early on, it was on the day after Christmas that another stop was made at the small shop on Green Valley Parkway and continuing to color outside the lines with a focus on superior ingredients the results were every bit as good as prior, the savory options now matching the high standard set by those trending sweeter.
Continuing to offer their own house roasted beans in a variety of brews while cutting no corners sourcing everything from organic grains to antibiotic free meats, it was to seven new items that tastebuds were treated and weaving a path through textures and flavors that were each quite dynamic even those most difficult to please would be hard pressed to name a single item their “favorite.”
Having already mentioned the skilled young women responsible, Chefs Ryan-Small and Kravetz given creative ‘carte blanche’ by owner Juanny Romero who continues to settle for nothing but the best, gone are items that were seasonally more appropriate to Nevada’s late summer, the options for early winter trending more rustic and hearty, though never too heavy or rich.
Expectedly a bit picked over at the 3pm on a Saturday, an advanced request thankfully seeing Juanny set aside some of her favorites earlier that day, it was with a pair of quiches lightly rewarmed in the oven that the tasting got started and with crumbly Feta dialing up the funk next to Sundried Tomatoes in a gluten free crust while herbal Pork dazzled alongside Green Onions in Gruyere the question of which to order was essentially one of preference, or dietary discretion in those unfortunately afflicted with Sprue.
Moving next to a pair of hand pies, both rustic pockets baked as opposed to fried, suffice it to say that stewed apples and cinnamon present a pairing with almost universal appeal while the creamy butternut squash is so rich in herbal aromatics that it almost tastes like a curry.
Sad to see the Coconut-Pineapple Scone retired for the season, but equally impressed by a moist Sticky Toffee version that I’m told features squash itself, it was after a bit of a break that a duo of desserts were investigated, the miniature Banana Loaf perhaps the best I’ve ever tasted as toasty nuts balanced creamy white frosting while the miniature pie offered a Best-of-Both-Worlds mash-up of two holiday favorites.
FIVE STARS: Still the most innovative bakery in town, a whole lot of talent and creativity making up for a selection smaller than some, time has only seen Mothership’s execution grow stronger and with no signs of stopping in a quest to serve guests no different than herself or her family Juanny and team remain a standard bearer for doing things right in a city long lacking for any bakery with such standards.
RECOMMENDED: Sticky Toffee Scone, Banana Walnut Cake, Gluten Free Spinach, Feta, Sundried Tomato Quiche.
AVOID: Arriving late as popular items are prone to selling out.
TIP: Literally changing the menu on a daily basis those looking for specific items are encouraged to call the morning of to see what is available that day.
WHAT THE STARS MEAN: 5 World Class, 4 Excellent, 3 Good, 2 Fair, 1 Poor.
