A longtime staple of New Orleans’ Uptown district, the balmy weather making one wonder why more artisan Ice Cream shops have not popped up over the years, The Creole Creamery has occupied its space at 4924 Prytania Street since 2004 and although perhaps no longer *the* most adventurous concept in an ever-evolving market, the results speak to a place that has earned its accolades while continuing to innovate and mature.
Presenting diners with the mantra of “Eat Ice Cream. Be Happy.,” a phrase that even the most ardent dieter would have trouble disagreeing with, The Creole Creamery offers some three-dozen flavors including Sugar-free and Sorbet daily, the choice of toppings no less numerous with choices contributing to Sundaes, Shakes and other concoctions made to accommodate a broad range of tastes.
Limiting samples during peak times, a 5:55pm arrival finding the store sparsely populated and servers happy to chat, it was with seven small spoonfuls that The Creole Creamery showed off a wide range of bold flavors amidst a high milk-fat base with substantial creaminess, the signature Creole Cream Cheese a tangy taste unlike any experienced prior while the Nectar Sorbet was also something New Orleans Specific , a flavor something like Fruit Punch meets Frangipane that speaks of the city’s long lost Soda Fountains and Sno-ball Shops.
Happy to see the $5 “baby scoop sampler” as a menu option, each scoop of the quartet far larger than most of the balls sold in Italy for €3-4, Pumpkin Praline tasted something like a mixture of the two Holiday Pies with more restrained sweetness than either, the Molasses Oatmeal Cookie another unique taste with great complexity by way of taste as well as texture, the Café Au Lait and Black & Gold Crunch fairly similar in terms of the base with the former better for Coffee lovers while the latter should appeal to kids – and adults – of all ages.
