Found at 818 Franklin Avenue and known to use the hashtag #bitcheslovesprinkles on the Instagram account @drunkbakers, Butter & Scotch is that unlabeled red façade you are likely to pass right by even when using GPS to find it, though for those who do step inside the experience is definitely a unique one with LGBT rights preached right on the menu next to creative Cocktails and desserts with names like Hotline Bling or Unicorn Treat.

Co-Owned by Allison Kave and Keavy Blueher, the location in Crown Heights undoubtedly a schlep for those in Manhattan or the more trendy parts of Brooklyn, Butter & Scotch officially went Brick & Mortar in the early part of 2015 and since growing their name by way of word of mouth, self promotion and eventually landing a spot on The Chew the two ladies and their staff are now considered to be an essential part of the neighborhood, a definite step up from the duo’s Smorgasburg days.

Proclaimed “the Bar & Bakery of your dreams” by Clinton Kelly, a difficult to quantify comment as few places save for Manhattan’s recently shuttered Sweet Revenge and New Orleans’ Bakery Bar have tried such a thing, Butter & Scotch nonetheless juxtaposes a kitchen full of ovens directly beside a well-stocked bar with tables at the rear, the majority of the items pre-made and thus ready for fast service as a group of six sat down to taste seven Baked goods, plus a Root Beer Float.

Smartly playing off Social Media friendly ideas like sprinkles and glitter, though the interior lighting is hardly conducive to the sort of eye-popping #nofilter shots of a place like Union Fare, those looking to sample the menu’s highlights are encouraged to begin with either the simple Salted Chocolate Chip Cookie that does a nice job of balancing bitter, dark chips with flakes of Fleur de Sel or the elaborately decorated ‘Unicorn Treat’ that is essentially just a really good Butter Cookie lightly topped in Sprinkles and Gold-tinged Sugar Granules.

Deciding to double-down on S’mores Pie for the day, not an easy thing to do considering the fact that such a dish has only been seen once outside of Brooklyn, Butter & Scotch’s version unfortunately falls short of the one at Pie Corps thanks to a slightly thinner Custard that renders it’s crust soggy, a different problem found in the Bourbon Ginger Pecan Pie that is impressive in terms of the spice profile, but far too focused on the sticky filling as opposed to the toasted Texas Pecans.

Not selling itself short by just doing Pie and Cookies, and as a matter of fact probably better known for Cake than anyone else in town not named Lady M, it was after marveling at the rich and chewy Triple Chocolate Brownie that guests finally delved into Kave and Blueher’s pair of Layer-Cakes, “The Birthday Cake” moist and buttery to the point that it was almost ‘wet’ amidst layers of airy Frosting while the Chocolate Cake tribute to Drake was perhaps even smoother with slick Chocolate Buttercream finding balance in a light drizzle of Caramel and shiny gold “Blingkles.”
