Now a fully realized concept, the rushed conversion from ACE Donuts to Pinkbox Doughnuts’ third location retrospectively a bad decision as early reviews critiqued both the store’s décor and product, it was Thursday morning that the space at Fort Apache and Tropicana was found gleaming, clever signage and a giant pink mascot demanding selfies joining more than fifty styles of fried Dough lining shelves.
Good news for fans, though less so for nearby competition who will assuredly need to improve if they wish to keep pace with Las Vegas’ original artisan doughnuttery, it is with warm greetings from friendly staff that guests are greeted on entry, already fair prices sweetened through cheaper-by-the-dozen discounts that apply regardless of whether one chooses OG Classics, Good Fellas, Show Offs or Fancy Pancy.
Occupying 9435 West Tropicana Avenue inside Crossroads Plaza Shopping Center, and now officially open 24-hours with fresh bakes replenishing supply as necessary, it was with items carefully boxed and delivered to an office three miles away that indulgence commenced, a newly devised naming scheme branding Roberto Armanino’s famous Caramel Cheesecake as The Caramelo, though per Shakespeare “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”
Continuing with classics, both Gimme Smore and Vegas Cream attesting to proper frying times as soft pockets surround Cream and Custard without becoming damp, it seems as though July’s “Doughnut of the Month” has decided to stick around thanks to its popularity, the round titled “Purple Rain” a lot like “Sweetie Pie” in terms of taste, though texture is magnified by crumbles placed on top.
Also retaining the “Station Wagon” from August, because why would anyone pass up an opportunity to enjoy airy Butterfinger Whip inside a golden Longjohn, October’s Doughnut of the Month curtails creativity for a cause and succeeds by shellacking a Yeast Twist with Pink Frosting and donating 30-cents from each one sold to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Impressing as always with a “DoughCro,” widely separated layers with Orange Glaze and a Vanilla core replicating the flavor of a Flintstones Push-Up, fans of Fruit will also not be let down by hefty Apple Fritters or two additional Bismarks, the “Raspberry Squeeze” nestling Housemade Raspberry Jam Filling inside and “Love My PB&J” doubling down with a swirl of Creamy Peanut Butter.
Presumably naming “The Goodman” after Las Vegas’ former or current mayor, and adding emphasis to a traditional Old Fashion with Frosting plus crunchy Sprinkles, another Cake Doughnut from the collection aims to please by replicating the flavors of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup while those in need of a Girl Scout Cookie fix will do well to order “The Big Samoan” featuring Caramel and Coconut on top with Chocolate Shell on the bottom.
FIVE STARS: A fan of the staff and fried Dough at ACE it was a little sad when the store closed, but leave it to Las Vegas’ best Doughnut shop to step in and fill the void with old favorites and fun new ideas at prices less than a third of what some places are trying to convince guests is appropriate.
RECOMMENDED: The Caramelo, Purple Rain, The Big Samoan, Apple Fritter, The Goodman, Orange Face DoughCro, Raspberry Squeeze, Station Wagon.
AVOID: N/A, but bring cash for orders less than $5.
TIP: Open 24/7, 10% off six and 20% discount on a dozen.
WHAT THE STARS MEAN: 5 World Class, 4 Excellent, 3 Good, 2 Fair, 1 Poor.
