Rooster
Ham & Jam Biscuit, Fontina Cheese, Overeasy Egg / Brunch Burger with Breakfast Sausage, Overeasy Egg, Fontina Cheese, Rooster Mayo / Breakfast Potatoes
Finnish Pancake, Butter, Housemade Strawberry Jam
Described as a “European-style urban Café,” Rooster is known for long lines across two locations in St. Louis, an early arrival during inclement weather still finding plenty of patrons present while Food delivered by pleasant servers was well-priced and enjoyable.
Touting Crepes and Sandwiches beginning at 7:00am on weekdays and 8:00am on weekends, it was by foot that the location at 1104 Locust Street was approached from free Sunday Parking, a hostess suggesting seating in the smallest of three rooms with shabby-chic décor and blues playing from the ceiling.
Owned by Restaurateur Dave Bailey, with lots of branding and “EAT LOCAL” shirts (that were sold-out in every size but XL) throughout, it was after lengthy perusal of items both sweet and savory that a two-part order was placed, management graciously allowing a small edit that the kitchen failed to execute correctly, though the result was still good.
Waiting perhaps ten-minutes while sipping water, seats beginning to fill briskly around nine o’clock, it was with the two-top nearly full that first bites were taken of dueling Biscuits, the “Brunch Burger” made correctly with herbaceous Sausage balance by Egg and Cheese while the “Ham & Jam” requested in place of a second oddly lacked Jelly with spicy Mayo served in its stead.
Unmoved by Breakfast Potatoes, but happy to see nicely-layered Biscuits with plenty of Butter, dish two featured a Finnish Pancake rather than American or French versions, its oven-baked finish yielding caramelization on both sides of a Custard-soft center without a lot of sweetness that made for an excellent pairing with either Maple Syrup or housemade Strawberry Jam.
