Although Roberto Armanino’s little shop has moved into a corporate-owned phase focused on expansion, there is no doubt Pink Box remains the best Doughnut shop in Las Vegas, a title it has held since opening and shows no sign of relinquishing with several new options and monthly specials joining their classics and novelties.
Open since late 2012 and improving since day one, it was arriving just after 11:00am on the first day of March that a baker’s dozen +1 was arranged, the store at 7531 West Lake Mead Boulevard busy as ever with several fresh items cooling on racks behind the counter.
Recently raising prices, though still fair and sweetened through cheaper-by-the-dozen discounts that apply regardless of whether one chooses OG Classics, Good Fellas, Show Offs or Fancy Pancy, it was along with family that Doughnuts were divided and tasted, a two year old in the midst immediately taken by Pink Box’s “Pooh” which thankfully seems less rich than prior while classics such as the Buttermilk Bar and two Old Fashioned rings remain reference-standard.
Continuing with filled creations, both John Lemon and Vegas Cream attesting to proper frying times as soft pockets surround Gel and Custard without becoming damp, it seems as though July’s “Doughnut of the Month” has decided to stick around thanks to its popularity, the round titled “Purple Rain” a lot like Pink Box’s original “Sweetie Pie” in terms of taste, though its consistency is magnified by crumbles placed on the surface.
Impressing as always with a “DoughCro,” widely separated layers with Chocolate Glaze and a Peanut Butter core riffing Reese’s, fans of Fruit will not be let down by hefty Apple Fritters or two additional Bismarks, “Baby Got Razz” nestling Housemade Raspberry Jam inside with Cheesecake Cream and “Love My PB&J” doubling down with a swirl of Creamy Peanut Butter.
Further delighted by the PinkBox “Cherry Bomb,” a Yeast Doughnut with Vanilla Frosting, Housemade Cherry Filling and Streusel, Chocolate was reserved to finish, first above and below a girl scout themed “Samoa” topped in Caramel and Toasted Coconut, then via the Golden Knight which is a messy textural masterpiece thanks to Chocolate Frosting, White Chocolate Chips and Peanut Butter Drizzle.
