Despite shuttering Fiona after just nine months Chef Nicole Rucker is back at it with a kiosk inside Grand Central Market, the limited-hours “Fat + Flour” selling some of her famous Baked Goods while a kickstarter and pop-ups such as Nicole’s birthday event with Milk Cult seek to offer something more in the near future.
Known through years baking for others including Travis Lett and James Starr, plus 2019 cookbook “Dappled,” Rucker’s concise collection is located just upstairs adjacent Belcampo Meat Co., and although choices are said to change weekly those willing to arrive early will likely find slices of signature Key Lime and Chocolate Chess Pies.
Sharing the stage this on this particular Saturday with East-Coast-based Milk Cult, it was once through a short line that choices came easy, $4 scoops of Harry’s Berries Strawberry Ice Cream and creamy “Bacon” Avocado each subtly stunning while a Dark Chocolate Brownie achieves similar taste as Rucker’s Chess with less Pudding-like consistency.
Saving the best for last, its recipe in “Dappled” labor-intensive enough to justify prices some consider steep, the thought of settling for just one slice of Fat + Flour’s Key Lime Pie seemed negligent while a double-cut wedge was perhaps “too much” for one guest, but not enough to stop this writer from finishing.
