Born in West Dundee, John and Allison Reno’s CRAFT Donuts + Coffee inched closer to Chicago during summer of last year, an outpost inside the Des Plaines Metra Station offering several of the couple’s artisan rings for guests with the foresight to drive right past Dunkin.
Currently open from 8am until Noon Friday thru Sunday, COVID-19 precautions and convenient online ordering making the walk-up window, curbside handoff or delivery all viable options, it was with rain pelting down that six selections were found boxed and ready, the Gluten Free choice visibly smaller than the others and frankly depressing for those with Celiac or perceived intolerance who have to settle for such an insipid and texturally disastrous “treat.”
Leaving behind two-thirds of the outlier, CRAFT Donuts immediately earned their title with three Vegan Yeast-raised rounds, the fact that no Eggs or Butter can produce such a fluffy base unexpected while Toppings including thick Cookie Butter and stewed-Peaches plus Streusel came liberally applied and delicious.
Further impressed by Maple Chai, chopped Pecans adding a toasty linger to the already complex pairing, fans of Cake Donuts should keep an eye on CRAFT Donuts + Coffee’s rotating menu because although the standard Old Fashioned is good, Double Chocolate is a work of art thanks to the soft Brownie-like Dough fried just long enough to render the outer-edge crispy.
