World’s Best Carrot Cake

Gluten Free Chocolate Carrot Cake
More than a little out of the way up in the town of Woodfin there is a small counter and a large kitchen claiming to produce the best carrot cake in the world – a claim so bold that they actually named the store and the website “World’s best carrot cake,” obviously necessitating a visit. A family run business from the kitchen to the counter with carrot cakes of all sizes and shapes, gluten free, vegan, or organic my arrival at the small shop was on a Friday afternoon and with no slices available I thus opted for an organic carrot cupcake I was assured was ‘every bit as good’ as the real deal and wanting to see what else the bakery could do I also picked up a gluten free chocolate carrot cupcake to go. The Verdict – good but not the best largely because as much as I enjoyed the density of the moist cake I personally found the hefty vanilla notes used in the cream cheese frosting to be a bit distracting, masking the subtle savory notes of the walnuts and carrots rather than highlighting them and, to that end, I actually preferred the chocolate version simply for doing something interesting, the carrot s making the cocoa a bit more earthy and robust while the walnut studded cream cheese icing added sweetness without being pronouncedly sugary. Obviously subjective, but for my dining dollar the best carrot cake still resides at Pattycake Vegan in Columbus and for something a little more dressed up you’d be hard pressed to find one better than DW Bistro Las Vegas.
