Highly recommended by my server at McCrady’s who’d apparently picked up her fondness for the restaurant from Chef Brock, Rutledge Cab Company would follow an abysmal visit to Two Boroughs Larder not only more than redeeming the afternoon, but also proving to be one of the biggest surprises of our trip to Charleston. Owned and Operated by Chef Robert Carter who happened to be at the restaurant during our visit and without a doubt a “place where the locals eat” one of the first things one notices about Rutledge Cab Co upon opening the door is a sense of welcome – smiles all around, servers having fun, and the mood lively – and just after that one notices the smell of the charcoal, an indoor grill factoring into much of the restaurant’s cuisine, including both a delicately charred flatbread and much of the charcuterie on a the plentiful and rustic “fillin’ station’ board. From beginning to end a meal that was not only a whole lot of fun but exquisitely prepared and thoroughly delicious be weary that portions here are larger than one would guess given the low menu prices and either bring a large appetite or a few friends because neither the five layer red velvet cake nor the too-thick-for-a-straw nutella shake should be missed.
