Recently celebrating a year at the former location of New Center Eatery Joe Louis Southern Kitchen is the latest project from Johnny Cannon, his Sweet Magnolia’s in Southfield now shuttered with full focus turned to black history and Detroit’s legendary boxer.
Themed after the former champ, an interior replicating houses with memorabilia all around, Joe Louis Southern Kitchen’s menu stretches across classic and modern Southern plates near Supino Pizza and other upscale concepts at 6549 Woodward Avenue.
From “Golden Gloves” French Toast to the “Weigh-in,” with pleasant service across an hour, Breakfast began with Handcut Fries along a big bowl of Gumbo, its Roux less dark than many but still featuring great depth bolstered by spicy Sausage and Shrimp.
Using less robust Stew to fill a generous Fried Turkey Leg, or perhaps just an illusion of such since the Poultry itself was moist and rich, the $2.50 Buttermilk Biscuit was something of a let-down in comparison to fluffy Key Lime Pie Pancakes and decadent Bread Pudding served steamy for just seven bucks.
