Open from 8am daily Pineapple King Bakery is a Bay Area darling, the take-away spot in Sunset offering 14 different kinds of Pineapple Buns in a family tree plus additional Hong Kong Pastries both sweet and savory.

Frequently generating a line near Irving and 20th Avenue, though early arrivals will find little available while later guests are often told certain Buns are “sold out,” it was after leaving empty-handed at 8:15am that a better selection was found at noon when recently-added Pudding Baguette were still warm beneath a caramelized Custard top.

Also selling Custard Tarts, less flaky than many but fair priced and not too sweet, Pineapple Buns run the gamut from filled to buttered with crumbly topping that contrasts well with soft Bread and works well with Custard or Egg Yolk but less so with Taro that eats more like Glutenous Rice.
