Referred to as ‘darling’ and ‘cute’ by friends the Upper West Side location of Sugar and Plumm may not seem like the sort of place a 33 year old guy with no children would end up for breakfast on a weekday but with a menu featuring a number of my favorite things and desserts and pastries from Pichet Ong it seemed perfect place for breakfast on my sister’s birthday, a meal enjoyed in the presence of only two other adult diners who also seemed to favor breakfasts closer resembling dessert. Truly a charming space with a candy store up front, hues of white and purple throughout, plus excellent service from a young British woman named Helen it would not take long to make menu decisions and also sampling wide from the pastry case our meal would turn out anything but ‘adult,’ though thoroughly delicious. Beginning first with crispy chicken overlying waffles somewhere between Liege and Brussels given their crunchy sugar batter and moving on to crunchy sticks of custard topped with berry compote both primary plates were small but impactful and speaking to the quality of the pastries everything but the flaccid almond croissant was exquisite; the dense cocoa cupcake with creamy icing and a cookie halfway between a snickerdoodle and a bruleed egg custard a ‘destination’ sort of item, itself worth the trip up Amsterdam.
