An impromptu stop decided upon after a walk on the High Line a quick visit to the well regarded American Bakery “Empire Cake” started our Wednesday and taking a ‘some for now, some for later’ approach to the large selection of cakes and confections it was no surprise that the most traditional items shined the brightest. A cute place, essentially a counter and a case plus a small table, it was a matter of restraint that a half dozen items were selected and opting to enjoy the unfortunately soft and overly sweet almond croissant first everything that followed was good old fashioned sweetness ranging from the glazed tea cake loaded with autumnal spices through a hefty caramelized square of pecans over short bread and onward to three modestly sized cupcakes, the caramel plunging deep into the cocoa core of the best of the trio with flecks of salt adding nuance and contrast.
