A true classic soon to be closing its doors for ‘remodeling’ I finally decided it was time to visit Pastis for an early breakfast on our last morning in Manhattan and much like big brother Balthazar the bustling West Village Bistro proved perfectly serviceable and ‘sceney,’ though certainly overpriced. The sort of place where tourists, families, and ladies who lunch gather to linger over $10 oatmeal and $6 bacon or bottomless cups of $4 coffee it didn’t take either of us long to get over the sticker shock and with orders sent to the kitchen we began with a duo of pastries, tea, and coffee – the former requested to be warmed in the kitchen and all the better for it with the laminated crunch of the sticky bun truly one of the better pastries in the city. Moving on to main courses and ringing in at $14 and $16 respectively it can only be said that what Pastis lacks in imagination and portion it makes up for in ingredients and precision, both the pancakes and the French Toast textbook and served with spotless organic fruits and pure maple syrup in a setting nothing short of iconic.
