reviously featuring the culinary talents of Pichet Ong but later transitioned to an in-house pastry team focused on American desserts with Eastern influence “Spot” dessert bar had long been on my ‘to visit’ list and with Saturday night in the Lower East Side still relatively young there seemed no better time than the present to stop in, a single spot at the window countertop available amidst a jovial crowd of young Asian students from NYU as loud K-Pop played over head. Undoubtedly a locals sort of place and featuring a menu consisting of everything from cookies, cupcakes and ice cream to fully plated desserts both ‘classic’ and seasonal it was with little effort that I decided on a three-course tasting and warned by my server that this was ‘a lot’ for one person I proceeded, my only complaint being that all three items arrived at once as opposed to being coursed out thus leading to much melted ice cream. Doing my best to sample a wide swath of the menu and thus selecting one seasonal, one signature, and one ‘classic’ item the tasting began with the ‘golden toast,’ a pan griddled version of traditional honey toast that would prove good though not particularly special but moving on to the cream meets crunch kobocha cake and ‘best seller’ lava cake with smooth herbal white chocolate pouring forth from the cloud-like soufflé it would be difficult to decide which was more impressive, my lean toward the later if only because it elevated the ubiquitous lava cake to new heights both in terms of taste and texture while the green tea ice cream was perhaps the best I’ve ever had.
