An impromptu stop en route to brunch at Superba Snack Bar with friends both new and old, Los Angeles based Groundwork Coffee Company on Rose Avenue would prove an admirable pick-me-up amidst trendy Venice locals both young and old; a well crafted menu of options brewed to order or self serve featuring no less than six of the organic roaster’s expertly roasted blends and single origins. An interesting setup for a local roaster with house-baked pastry and a number of drip selections all available for self serve it was to the trusty almond croissant and a small coffee that I turned and sampling my way down the line I was immediately impressed by the quality of the roasts, each gently balanced with good mouth-feel plus subtle notes all the more pronounced at home via French Press where I’ve since brewed both the Venice Blend and sun-dried La Lagunilla. A cozy spot with a good vibe and low pretense I’d personally opt for Groundwork over snooty, overcrowded import Intelligentsia on Abbot Kinney for my Venice coffee needs if I lived local…though unless one prefers their croissants of the soft, dense variety I’d strongly consider an alternative to either for my pastry needs.
