Due to fly out of AUS at 8pm my final stop in ATX before driving to the airport was appropriately a food truck, specifically South Congress’ critically acclaimed “Hey! …You Gonna Eat or What?” Ostensibly a sandwich shop focusing on a handful of signatures plus the occasional daily special while purporting a culture of “Austin’s rudest business” suffice it to say that much of the “bad attitude” mantra is a put-on and speaking at length with the two young men in charge while waiting for my order actually revealed not only great southern hospitality, but good business savvy paired with a true passion for quality sourcing and prep to produce their stoner-chic cuisine. Admittedly having sought out the truck for something very specific it was with baited breath and plenty of banter that I waited just under fifteen minutes for my Monte Cristo to arrive and quickly delving into the sandwich my expectations were immediately exceeded – the impossibly light beer batter giving way to a creamy center teaming with brine and smoke only to be brought into sharp focus by sweet-n’-sour jam. Wowed by the sandwich and working slowly after a request for more jam it was perhaps five minutes after I’d finished three-quarters that the daily special dessert arrived and although nowhere near as subtle or light as the Cristo the deep-fried juxtaposition of coffee cake and crunchy streusel stuffed with molten banana and Nutella was every bit as wonderful – the sight of it on the table prompting two young ladies passing by to forgo plans for the truck next door…and their “diets” as well. How ‘rude,’ indeed.
