Tres Leches Cake

Located just South of the 215 on Rainbow Blvd and last visited in December 2013 it was actually a birthday cake purchased to celebrate 36 that prompted a return to Drago Sisters Bakery, little changed at the small shop in the past 27 months with the Tres Leches still a showstopper while the rest is fine, though rarely great.

Showing some signs of its age, the worn doors plus pulled blinds at 4:15pm at first making one wonder if the Bakery is open as the setting sun can apparently become quite intense inside, Drago Sisters still seems to generate a whole lot of foot traffic despite a small stripmall footprint and with several families making purchases as I perused, the cupcakes remain a popular option, almost a dozen varieties on offer though the cleverly decorated Salted Caramel version given as a gift to me was itself quite dry and flavorless.

Opting for a half-dozen novel options, the Cupcakes, Boston Cream Pie and Macarons previously tried, a trio of cookies from Drago Sisters jars offer a decennt value for the money even if none were particularly “memorable,” the $4.75 Cream Pie far, far less so as the crust was desnse and pasty while the interior contained not a single chunk of banana but instead a mildly sweet “pudding” that may or may not have contained a bit of natural banana at all.

Somehow deciding that Brownies justified nearly $5 each one could not help but wonder just how good they would be, and although the Walnut and Caramel topped iteration was dense with quality chocolate the better bet was, in fact, the more affordable Seven-Layer Bar with a buttery Graham Cracker crust beneath the flavors of Bittersweet plus White Chocolate Chips, Butterscotch, and toasted Coconut flakes.

TWO AND A HALF STARS: Holding onto tradition as the rest of Las Vegas and Henderson have seen the pastry scene stepped up substantially, Drago Sisters still serves the best Tres Leches Cake I have ever tasted while the rest of the options seem overpriced and underwhlming for what they are.

RECOMMENDED: Tres Leches Cake, Seven Layer Bar.

AVOID: Salted Caramel Cupcake, Banana Cream Pie.

TIP: 8a-6p Monday through Saturday, call, visit or go online for special orders.

WHAT THE STARS MEAN: 5 World Class, 4 Excellent, 3 Good, 2 Fair, 1 Poor
