Located on Avenue Jean Volders, the central spot amidst prime shopping a difficult space to park at almost all times, Chouconut is a relatively new entry into the Belgian dining scene and offering a menu almost exclusively comprised of its eponymous baked pastry the comparison to Éclairs & Gourmandises seems rather obvious, though by-and-large Chouconut comes up short in terms of price as well as quality.
Occupying what appears to be an old home, the kitchen small and the wiring so sketchy that the team managed to blow a fuse while mixing dough during my visit, options at Chouconut consist mainly of small orbs piped with a variety of fillings beneath cream or frosting, a small selection of cookies offering a bit of variety, though not particularly compelling.
No doubt a cozy place, the dining room featuring small tables and chic furniture with free WiFi encouraging patrons to stick around, it was after some deliberation that four choux-balls were selected along with two cookies and a lightly torched donut, the later interesting in that it did not necessarily seem ‘fried’ given its levity, an impressive task given the caramelized exterior and creamy custard filling.
Deciding to sample cookies next, the rims crisp but the center unfortunately a bit dried out, tastes of the small orbs ranging from €2.50-€3.00 proved a hit and miss experience, the Rocher Chocolate easily the best with pronounced cocoa tones plus a chocolate shell providing crispness while others saw the pastry quality somewhat compromised by dampness, the Salty Caramel faring better than those with cream and fruit components.
