A brief stop for a pick-me-up, baked goods long gone by noon, Bard Coffee has been called Portland’s best place for an afternoon caffeine boost and although several styles including Pour-over, Espresso, Latte and Cappuccino are offered it is the more novel items that seem to draw the most attention, amongs them several chilled options including the nitrogen-infused and heady coldbrew.

Not really much to look at, the floor-to-ceiling windows up front gazing out into the street while interior is sparsely decorated with whole beans and brewing paraphernalia, Bard features the sort of soundtrack and service familiar from Intelligentsia, Ritual or Stumptown and although no one really seems to smile much at the counter, almost all patrons looked more than satisfied while chatting with their friends, reading, or surfing the Web.

Having experience Nitro Coffee several times in the past, the mouthfeel not unlike beer with a deep complexity of flavors enhanced by tiny bubbles, Bard’s Nitro comes at a typical price of approximately $4 for 12oz and although the foam is not as robust as some of the alternatives there is no doubt these folks know what they are doing in terms of roasting, the caffeine jolt rather substantial while medium roasting highlights the bean’s fruit and caramel notes.
