Self proclaimed as Las Vegas “Original Sports Bar and Restaurant,” an appearance on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives making the space at 276 North Jones Boulevard more famous than it might be otherwise, The Four Kegs…or Four Kegs Sports Bar…or Four Kegs Sports Pub is one of those old-school spots that has maintained a steady clientele in a city built on transiency, some business in the area spontaneously providing an impetus to stop in and find out why.
Serving consistently since 1977 and one of a handful of 24/7 Gaming Joints with the foresight to partition off the dining room from Cigarettes and Video Poker to preserve the lungs of diners including those under 21-years of age, The Four Kegs features several sections including a large group area as well as tables along a narrow hallway, the area designated as “Dining Room” juxtaposing the kitchen featuring several televisions tuned to sports plus some comfy, broken-in booths.
Pleasant in service, a few Four Kegs veterans coaching a younger woman who was clearly new but handling several tables of regulars like an old pro, it was from a menu of Bar Food classics that decisions were debated, an eventual order of six items and a Soft Drink tallying $50 after tax and tip – not cheap, but not a bad value considering the portions served.
Not upscale in any way, the overhead soundtrack dating back to Ace of Base and Journey as the NBA captured the attention of many, it was with a basket of Fried Vegetable plus Fries rolled in Hot Sauce that the meal got started, the latter a thick Steak-cut that was unfortunately somewhat flaccid while the not-technically-a-vegetable Mushrooms highlighted a basket that was mostly an oily delivery mechanism for bottled Ranch.
Edible, though not inspired, course two was perhaps a better way to see what the Sports Bar kitchen was capable of, a six-slice rectangle of “Sicilian” Pizza well-topped but falling short in terms of Crust as a lack of leavening left all but the outside edge soggy, the DDD-revered Original Stromboli a much better use for the Dough as a slighter amount of Mozzarella and tangy Marinara allowed the $9.95 ‘Sandwich’ to bake up crispy and golden brown.
Not making any of their Desserts in-house, the waitress keeping cards close to her chest when asked which local Bakery supplies the goods, thin slices of two Cakes were chosen with Cheesecake saved for another time, the Chocolate actually incredibly rich beneath thick Ganache while the four-layer Spumoni went all-in with a thin layer of Frosting plus a robust Graham Cracker surrounding three lightly sweetened Ice Creams plus a layer of Chocolate.
TWO AND A HALF STARS: Fair-to-Middling in a city with no lack of 24/7 dining, sports and gambling, The Four Kegs is a worthwhile visit for those in the area looking for something to eat at any hour of the day, though with the development of places like Naked City Tavern or even The Sporting Life and Born and Raised it most certainly is not any sort of ‘destination.’
RECOMMENDED: Original Stromboli, Spumoni Cake.
AVOID: Cajun Fries, Zucchini Chips.
TIP: $7.99 Lunch Specials offered from 11:30a-2:30p M-F include items like Cheeseburgers, Subs or Cheesesteak while the Graveyard Special knocks 1/2 off Stromboli or Pizza from Midnight to 8am 7-days a week.
