Spending Thanksgiving at Disneyland, my first visit at age 36 after a childhood of drives down I-75 to The Magic Kingdom from Ohio, the epicure in me could not help but investigate the dining scene during a nearly 12-hour day of fun and adventure, Jolly Holiday Bakery Café the only in-park option deemed worthwhile after walking in along Main Street U.S.A.
More Cafeteria than French Café, a short queue moving quickly as patrons peruse an overhead menu plus Pastries stored inside glass cases on each side, it was on approaching the counter that a somewhat sizable order was formulated, the cost of nearly $45 for seven items plus one Coffee as steep as might be expected, though in reality not all that different when priced per item considering the cost of some “Quick Casual” spots these days.
Obviously unable to go full “Artisan” considering the volume, the imagination wandering to the sort of industrial baking employed at many Las Vegas Casinos that still manage to turn out attractive edibles, it was mostly I sweets that appetites were invested, the lone savory a Breakfast Sandwich that expectedly found the Croissant quite flaccid though the Bacon, Cheddar and Eggs were visibly seen to be fresh griddled just beyond the kitchen doors.
Expecting competency, though certainly not greatness, it was in bites of a simple Sugar Cookie that the tasting of pastries got underway, the signature shape of Mickey Mouse more impressive than a shortbread base that was neither crisp nor soft or particularly, the Raspberry Macaron actually far more impressive with plump Berries aligned around naturally flavored filling that saw the crackling shell surprisingly resistant to sog.
Again taking a step back with a Blueberry Sourcream Muffin, the moisture largely relegated to the edges while the center ate quite spongy, better bites were found in the Chocolate Dipped Coconut Matterhorn as well as a tender Black Forest Bundt Cake surprisingly rich with Cherries, the seasonal Gingerbread Éclair offering a surprisingly ‘adult’ taste with nicely-textured Choux piped full of Cream that tasted far less like sugar than it did the fragrant Root.
