The Loop: Handcrafted Churros
Cinnamon Sugar Churro with Nutella
Strawberry Glaze Churro with Sprinkles
Cinnamon Sugar Churro with Vanilla Soft Serve, Cookie Butter Syrup, Peanut Butter Cups, Biscoff Cookie
Located just a hop, skip and a jump from Eiswelt Gelato, their curved Mexican Donuts lighting up Instagram as frequently as the Gelato creatures down the way, Westminster’s The Loop was ironically born from the world of social media and #hashtags, the owners responsible for not only one of the most well-followed food feeds on the internet but also prospectors of how the perfect photograph affects metrics in 2016.
A small and brightly lit space almost without shadows, the lines clean and walls modestly decorated with signage that offers a brand-friendly backdrop, those entering The Loop after dark may feel as though they just stepped into a tanning booth or some sort of Sci-Fi conveyance, the overhead menu suggesting several pre-customized options though a variety of toppings and Ice Cream also allow for a whole lot of personalization.
Bending each Donut so that its 24” length is halved, the constant flow of clients generally assuring that each Churro is still warm, it was just prior to ten o’clock on Black Friday that our group was treated to a five minute wait, all three ‘styles’ represented in the order with the standard version a perfectly fine, if not genre-defining curl, that is heavily topped in Cinnamon Sugar with a choice of dipping Sauces that even to a child seems quite meager.
Certainly not as light as the version offered at B.S. Taqueria, though oil appears to be fresh and not oversaturating the crisp Dough, a Strawberry dipped version with Sprinkles tasted a little too artificial – think Dunkin’ Donuts pink glaze – while the Sundae was tasty, but no better than the sum of its parts which added up to taste like an unmixed version of Moose Tracks Ice Cream from Denali.
