Boasting over 100 flavors in their arsenal, each made of high quality ingredients in small batches daily, it was midday Monday that a stop was made at Sebastian Joe’s Ice Cream and although fairly quiet at that time both service and product attest to a company committed to doing things right.
Located at 1007 West Franklin Avenue and a community staple since 1984, the Scoop shop since adding a Coffee Roaster and Bakery to a sizable storefront styled like an old-school Soda Fountain, it was shortly after entering that two employees paused their duties to offer greetings, a tasting to follow including classics like Butter Pecan and a formidable Salty Caramel plus Pavarotti which tastes like a Banana blended with Vanilla and Caramel with Chocolate Chips adding texture.
A favorite of Uptown but originating on Upton Avenue in South Minneapolis, a historic budgeting issue and Minnesota’s extremes of weather gifting that area with particularly bad roads, it was finally deciding on the famous Nicollet Ave. Pot Hole atop a fresh Waffle Cone that an order was placed, the Dark Chocolate base finding added richness in Fudge and crumbled Heath Bar kept in check by occasional grains of Sea Salt.
Open at 7am daily, a bonus for those who feel there is no wrong time for Ice Cream, it was additionally from a collection of Pies, Cookies and Pastries that two Bars were selected, one named after an employee offering New Orleans-style Pralines and partially dried Cranberries particularly alluring while the seven-layer square named for another local road was also enjoyable though a bit one-note thanks to an abundance of Coconut.
