Having recently tasted through nearly a dozen Doughnut shops from Minneapolis to Winnipeg, including MSN’s “Best” in Minnesota and North Dakota, it was midday Friday that another visit was made to Pink Box Doughnuts on Lake Meade Boulevard, Sin City’s original purveyor of fancy Fried Dough once again with a few new tricks (and treats) up their sleeves.
Now a Valley favorite for nearly six years, the era before Pink Box when locals had to rely on Ronald’s all but forgotten, Autumn 2018 sees Pink Box once again eyeing the future while at the same time honoring tradition, both Buttermilk Bars and moist Chocolate Cake still Sin City’s best while a seasonal Pumpkin Ring reminisces of past years’ Sweet Potato but with bolder aromatics and a decorative touch.
Furthering the seasonal theme with Apples, a reprise of Summer’s American Pie improved by way of the Spice Cake base plus Caramel atop Brown Sugar Streusel, it was next that attention turned to designs created for Halloween including two Brioche Ghosts while Pumpkin Cheesecake was texturally good, but potentially benefited by a bit more Cinnamon or Nutmeg inside.
Finally giving new meaning to *grand* finale with a Doughnut unlike any seen prior, suffice it to say that indecisive diners will plenty of reasons to smile about Pink Box’s new “Happy Doughnut,” the multi-pound masterpiece featuring ten different flavors every bit as fluffy as its yeasty siblings and truly impressive in its attention to detail right down to two Doughnut Holes, Oreos and even a sparkly horn for the Unicorn.
FIVE STARS: Although the target audience for District Donuts at The Cosmopolitan is obviously different than that of Pink Box it is good to see the locally born business further step up their game in the face of new competition, and dollar for dollar both classics and novelties remain a bargain by comparison to other “best” Doughnuts across the Nation.
RECOMMEDED: Buttermilk Bar, Apple Crisp Cake Doughnut, Pumpkin Cake Doughnut, The Happy Doughnut.
AVOID: Pumpkin Cheesecake tastes mostly like Pink Box’s classic Cheesecake, and although not a “bad” thing it would benefit from a bit more “Pumpkin Spice.”
TIP: The Happy Doughnut is $32 and available by Pre-Order only while Halloween shapes are $13.20 a dozen and are currently available by calling the store or stopping in.
WHAT THE STARS MEAN: 5 World Class, 4 Excellent, 3 Good, 2 Fair, 1 Poor.
