One of the first “artisan” doughnut shops to break onto the scene – shockingly as far back as 1994 – my first visit to Doughnut Plant on the LES was far less than inspiring, yet given the strong word of mouth from friends I decided I owed the bakery a second chance and opting for the new Chelsea location with a focus on cake options I’m glad to say that sometimes first impressions can be deceiving as each of my five selections proved to be excellent while the lack of a line and presence of seating kept the hassle factor to a minimum. From the dense cocoa of the blackout to the subtle and smoky earth notes of the pistachio to a trio of doughnuts based on cookies and cakes I would be hard pressed to name a ‘favorite’ amongst the quintet but rife with carrots, raisins, and spice I’d also have a hard time naming a better carrot cake in the city, authentic or not.
