Hidden inside La Placita de Santurce, minimal signage tucked behind a small patio easily overlooked by those passing by, La Alcapurria Quemá is nothing short of a destination for those seeking one of San Juan’s most outstanding casual eateries.
Largely populated by locals, the Calle Duffaut 251 address and variable hours doing little to diminish lines present from opening until COVID-19 curfew, it was after a thirty minute wait that two guests were seated along the bar, two servers pleasant and constantly moving to keep up with an open kitchen where two women could be seen creating plate after plate of delicious Food.
Known largely for fried Food, in particular eponymous Puerto Rican Fritters made with Mashed Plantains and stuffed with Meat, it was with cold Beverages that four Alcapurria got things started, Beef, Chicken and Baccala all greaseless and enjoyable, though the real star was a crunchy elongated stick filled with Crab.
Well priced considering portions and quality, each Fritter $3.50 and Pastelillos filled with Blood Sausage or Rabbit the same, it was with good fortune that Cabrito en Fricase was the daily special, Goat perfumed with a variety of Herbs succulent and tender along with three Sides.
Not passing on Mofongo, $5 with Broth an unequivocal bargain, Tostones at La Alcapurria Quemá are lighter and crispier than many while Coconut Arepas offer a delicate and flaky way to end an otherwise weighty meal.
