Per the story on the menu, The Tomato Head was originally planned as a French Bistro but somewhere along the way pizza became the focus and the crowds followed – enough to make the large restaurant on Market Square one of Knoxville’s most well regarded restaurants, enough to spawn a second location, and enough to put the locally-sourced and house-made focused spot on my dining agenda during a quick stop in the city. Heavy in wood and friendly in service with a wide variety of baked goods, sandwiches, soups, pizzas, and more on the menu plus an order/pay-up-front counter with ample seating for those waiting for their food it would not be long after arrival that my savories and sweets were placed before me simultaneously and a bit flustered as I watched my ice cream melt over the hot cobbler I tasted the pizza, instantly deciding the better part of valor would be to eat the cobbler as both slices were bland and underflavored with a crust equal to many high school cafeterias and cheese perhaps worse. Pizza an unmitigated disaster and thus largely uneaten at approximately $2.50 a slice both desserts would prove vastly superior largely based on the quality of the fresh peaches, a light poppyseed biscuit and ice cream providing depth of flavor and texture to the cobbler and excellent buttercream topping off a muffin literally wet with fruit but not overly sweet.
