Trumpeted by some as a Charleston institution and featuring early opening hours a family breakfast was planned at Toast before heading out to Firefly Distillery and the plantations I can only assume that our experience was an anomaly because from limited parking to condescending service through and including mediocre food and a restroom unfit for a rural gas station I really cannot fathom any degree of praise for the restaurant. Beginning with a server who tried to upsell every dish while downplaying the versions at other neighborhood restaurants to a substantial delay of nearly thirty minutes for dry ‘blueberry’ pancakes with Land-o-Lakes and Mrs. Butterworth’s, undercooked and bready French Toast topped with canned pie filling, and run-of-the-mill grits with anemic shrimp and fairly good fried green tomatoes it was a lone biscuit that proved to be the saving grace of the morning – a biscuit proudly served with “mixed berry” jam in a little packet alongside Land-o-Lakes and a bill that would have felt like a rip off even at 50% off.
