Firefly Distillery
Southern Accents Banana Pudding Liqueur, Southern Accents Chocolate Pecan Pie Liqueur, Peach Moonshine, Sea Island Java Rum, Sweet Tea Bourbon, Southern Lemonade Vodka
Part winery, part distillery, part farm, and part petting zoo it was at my sister’s suggestion that we made our way out to Wadmalaw Island to visit Firefly Distillery and while I cannot even pretend to be a conniseur of vodka, rum, bourbon, or shine I can admit that although I was skeptical at first I ended up not only having a great time but also learning a few things. With spirits for sale by the bottle or available as a six quarter-ounce (total 1.5 oz.) tasting for $6 with a souvenir shot glass to go we opted to try the flight first before committing to any purchase and with a clever young woman named Erin pouring our shots at well over the expected quarter ounce while explaining each selection and the brewing process we made our way through a collection of organic liquers, rums, vodkas, and even a true Tennessee Bourbon imported and infused with sweet tea before collecting a few bottles to take home at ~$20/each. A great time and a fun diversion from all the food, history, and Charleston culture be sure to wander the grounds, play some corn hole, swing on the tire swing, and visit the animals as well – the cow wandering the vineyards and “attack bunnies” were particularly charming, though the outhouses were less so.
