A Savannah staple since 1919 with all confections, frozen or baked, crafted on premises Leopold’s Ice Cream and Soda Fountain was a perfectly timed stop on a hot August day and touting principles of all-natural ingredients, no dyes, and no preservatives in a setting filled with props and posters from owner Stratton Leopold’s Hollywood career the place most certainly has a one-of-a-kind feel and plenty of Southern charm to spare with a surprisingly fast line considering all the tasting and chatter. Sampling widely and then selecting four double-scoops at $4.75 each before nabbing the last available table the most notable aspect of Leopold’s Ice Cream is the texture – dense and creamy like many old fashioned recipes but not quite as smooth as some newer artisan shops – but speaking to the flavors, everything tasted was excellent, particularly the decidedly un-green natural Pistachio, rich coconut, boozy and buttery rum bisque, and particularly the honey-almond-cream which tasted like a bit-o-honey minus the grit and tooth damage. Without a doubt a scoop shop worth a stop, though I’d skip the cupcakes as they were unfortunately a bit dry despite excellent cream cheese frosting, I was just glad we made it in before the Real Housewives who were walking in as we exited.
