Life of Pi – Kabocha Squash, Pumpkin Spice, Vanilla Bean
J Thrilla – Chocolate, Coconut Butter
Theobroma – Cacao Sugar
Begun as a “Sunday Ritual” by Nile and Hana Dreiling in Kauai Holey Grail can safely now be called a pilgrimage, those hand-fried Taro Donuts from a Burger trailer since spawning three Hawaiian storefronts plus Food Trucks including one at the Culver City Platform on Washington Boulevard.
Still generating lengthy waits circumvented by pre-orders, a local team enjoying Donuts nearby after a long run, it was Saturday morning that five freshly-fried rounds were enjoyed beginning with a piping-“Hot Single” with its crispy exterior decorated by Honey plus flakes of Sea Salt.
Sustainability and Supply-chain focused, local farmers from Hawaii to California and Oregon involved with Donuts all built upon Hawaii-grown Taro fried in 100% organic and sustainably-sourced Coconut Oil, “Island Chocolate” taps Lydgate Farms for Single Estate Chocolate Icing while “J Thrilla” ups the ante via a drizzle of pure Coconut Butter.
Heavy on branding, perhaps sacrilegious to some, Donuts arrive in 100% compostable packaging and completing this week’s “Community Box” with Cacao Sugar-rolled “Theobroma” plus Pumpkin-spiced “Life of Pi” it’d be hard to say this “culinary crusade” isn’t worth celebrating.
