Making my first trip to the state of Wisconsin since I was two years old it was a smooth drive after my morning run that saw me arrive quite hungry at Blue’s Egg, an unassuming Milwaukee diner celebrated for its locally sourced, scratch-baked interpretations of American breakfast and lunch staples. Every bit a ‘locals only’ spot where I seemed to be the only person unknown to the smiling staff I was none-the-less greeted like an old friend on entry and soon finding myself seated at a cozy two-top it was with wide eyes that I perused the pastry case and a menu where no less than a dozen items sounded quite good. Truly a space where home-style service is attuned to the needs of each table it was with the first of several cups of strong coffee that my meal began and eventually having to ask my server to slow down in order to maintain my balance of sweetener it would not be long before the first of my food arrived, a duo of apple and cream cheese layered coffeecake proving quite nice while Blue’s signature monkey bread with the $1 “crunked” supplement was even better, each already buttery bite only improved by a boozy sauce balanced out my Wisconsin cream. Already impressed it would not be long before my ‘main course’ arrived and although the pork came heavily recommended (and looked lovely at the table beside me) my palate again skewed sweet, the ‘Smothered’ French Toast gilded with locally sourced maple syrup supple and golden beneath a mountain of berries and crispy cookie crumble. Happily sated at this point but easily sold on a trio of $1 sweets by my server who’d already prepared me a cup of coffee to go it was finally in the cookie plate that I indulged and although both the chocolate chip bites and savory sugar cookie were nice it was the Key Lime custard that shined brightest, the flavors harkening something from Florida as opposed to Milwaukee but tangy and delicious none the less.
RECOMMENDED: Crunked Monkey Bread, Smothered French Toast, Key Lime Thumbprint.
AVOID: N/A.
TIP: One of those rare places easily flies under the tourist radar suffice it to say that Blue’s was nearly filled to its deceptively large capacity when I left at 9:00am and although a bit far from the city center those seeking a great breakfast at a fair price with service best described as the Midwest at its Best are well advised to make the trip, ideally on a weekday or early on a weekend as I hear rumor that waits can extend to an hour on Saturday and Sunday, both.
