With Yonaka now unfortunately a thing of the past Wednesday afternoon was the first time Purple Potato was delivered to #supportlocal lunch by Ramir Bolanos DeCastro himself, an early arrival with several bowls and trays once again making fans of all who had the opportunity to taste.
Still standing tall at 10090 South Eastern Avenue with a menu that has recently seen several additions, not the least of which is a daily Brunch that runs from 8am until 2pm, it was from a budget of $15 per person for twenty-five attendees that Chef Ramir was asked to create a spread including both Vegetarian and low-calorie options, a smattering of new Desserts also sent from which an expanded collection of Monster Cookies took center stage.
Not a short distance to travel from a storefront on the opposite side of the Valley, though careful packaging and planning allowed each dish including those with soft-poached Eggs to arrive unscathed, it was beginning with Purple Potato’s new Rice Bowl topped in thick Pork Belly that many guests got started, fried Shallots offering crispy contrast while sticky sweetness lacquering the Bacon found its foil in Pickled Vegetables served on the side.
Moving next to two of Purple Potato’s signature Salads, one named Coco a textural marvel even before adding shiny cubes of Poke that played well off spice and a hint of smoke, the even more popular option turned out to be “Rita” which offered thin strips of grilled Chicken atop fibrous Kale and Summer Vegetables dressed up as a traditional Cobb.
Continuing to bake Bread on-site, Whole Wheat Loaves with a soft crumb no easy task but at Purple Potato’s done right whether on its own or smeared with brightly colored “Jam” textured like Hummus, it was from here that Desserts stole the spotlight, the Ube-Flan now taking on the form of Cheesecake accompanied by naturally sweetened Custard thick like Crème Anglaise while the “Ultimate Ube Bar” reminds one of Gooey Butter Cake supported by a pliable Oatmeal base.
Happy to see a “Quick Casual” eatery that understands diners need variety to remain interested, a total of eight Monster Cookies now on rotation, suffice it to say that choosing the “right” one is largely a matter of personal taste and although it seems Mango-Calamansi would have been better off with White Chocolate than Dark every other soft-centered option was delicious, the Red Bean or Coconut Pandan most likely appealing to those who don’t want *too* much Sugar while Ube that tastes largely like Peanut Butter and Jelly or Dark Chocolate-Chocolate Chip offer the sort of richness that is best enjoyed with Coffee or a glass of cold Milk.
N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone this is now the third time that Chef Ramir’s Henderson Restaurant has managed to impress a broad demographic of diners and with new Rice Bowls and Desserts it seems safer than ever to say that whether one chooses healthy or indulgent the results are bound to be delicious.
RECOMMENDED: Bacon Adobo Garlic Fried Rice Bowl, Rita Salad, Ahi Tuna, Ube Flan Cheesecake, Coconut Pandan Monster Cookie, Ube Monster Cookie, Dark Chocolate Monster Cookie.
AVOID: From someone who dislikes Citrus and Chocolate the Mango Calamansi Monster Cookie did not work.
