Having previously discussed Johnny C’s Diner here, plus a faultless catering gig to follow, it was an honor to call on Chef Church and his team for another #supportlocal Lunch on Tuesday, Sous Chef Sam Brooks again arriving on time with a bounty of items carefully packed and temperature appropriate from fifteen minutes away.
All-in approximately $20 per diner, a cost more than warranted by quality Produce and portions that guaranteed several staff members also went home with dinner, it was from a mix of new and previously tasted Plates that lunch was constructed, Johnny’s Seasonal Market Salad now without Strawberries but dressed in Cucumbers atop mixed Greens, vibrant Tomatoes, Blue Cheese and Red Wine-soaked Onions.
Tapping a “#secretmenu” for variety, Deviled Eggs with Housemade Bread & Butter Pickles and plenty of Paprika a surprise sensation with the largely Latina staff, Johnny C’s buttery Potato Chips were a more predictable favorite while Cornbread from Wednesday’s #finerdiner Dinner series immediately surpassed any other in Sin City thanks to subtle sweetness balanced by Sour Cream and the nutty linger of Brown Butter.
Onward to Entrees, Johnny C’s Cubano again outpaced the competition thanks to a better-than-average amalgam of Ingredients pressed between Bread, the Hero Sandwich no less impressive despite its complexity while “Best Grilled Cheese” won Pork-free diners over with Honey, Brie and Walnuts between slices of Butter-griddled Brioche.
Not forgetting a few sweets, Chef Church’s Donut Holes crisp and oilless on the outside with a fluffy center surrounded by Cinnamon Sugar, it was mostly as a joke that these were perched atop Chocolate Cupcakes with Dark Chocolate Frosting, though in reality the effect taken in its entirety was reminiscent of a dunked Spanish Churro.
N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone, Johnny C’s combination of products and talent is nothing short of remarkable while the price-point is an undeniable bargain for quality Cuisine capable of pleasing a wide range of palates.
