La Perla Pixan Cuisine & Mezcal Store

Tortilla Chips – Salsa Verde, Salsa Rojo

Chilaquiles de Olla – Chocolate Mole, Cecina Beef

Enmoladas of Quelites & Requeson – Guajillo Mole

Located on 38th Street, not far from the beach, La Perla Pixan Cuisine & Mezcal Store ignores Playa del Carmen’s push towards progressive Mexican fare by looking back at traditional dishes cooked from scratch with classic technique.

Open from Breakfast to Dinner daily, the open air and smoking copal best enjoyed before or after midday’s peak sun, it is beneath umbrellas or a thatched roof that guests are offered seating, the clientele surprisingly local and service pleasant yet professional.

Offering a limited menu in the morning, though Pulque and Mezcal are ready to pour by 7:30am, it is with complimentary housemade Tortilla Chips that meals get started, both Salsas spicy in comparison to most though the creamy Green one is particularly *hot.*

Quiet early, but bustling with live music by evening, it was after ten minutes that two plates arrived simultaneously, the Chilaquiles with seared Beef and almost Dessert-like Mole maintain great texture despite Crema and Cheese while Vegetarian Emmoladas will see many sweating where they sit thanks to a complex Sauce that starts herbaceous before drifting bitter and finishing smooth despite the Guajillo’s slow-burn.
